The Cripple of Inishmaan

A Hollywood director visits a remote Irish island to cast his latest film and the locals begin to clamor for their once-in-a-lifetime chance at movie stardom. Surprisingly, the one with the biggest Hollywood dreams of all is Billy, a frail young man with the odds stacked against him.

This play comes to The Phoenix Direct from a smash-hit run on Broadway.  It is a dark comedy that features a cross-eyed look at “Irishness” and what it means to follow your heart – as twisted as it may be.

The Cripple of Inishmaan
by Martin McDonagh

February 5 thru March 1 at The Phoenix Theatre

Appearing: Deb Sargent, Gayle Steigerwald, Rob Johansen, Nathan Robbins, Tyler Ostrander, Ryan O’Shea, Michael Hosp, Paul Hansen and Gigi Jennewein.

We love Martin McDonagh. We started investigating his work years ago, and did a good number of them, including The Beauty Queen of Leenane, The Pillowman, and The Lieutenant of Inishmore to sell-out crowds throughout the run. We didn’t produce ‘Inishmaan’ when it was first released because at the time our organization wasn’t technically savvy enough to handle the needs of the show’s set. Over the last five years, we’ve put so much effort into improving how we build sets that we feel like we’ve finally caught up and can do it. And we still love the voice, and feel that it’s timely, especially given the recent success of the production starring Daniel Radcliffe on Broadway and in the West End. And we have a company of actors—many of whom are steeped in a history of performing in Irish plays—that we feel that we have the talent to do the best job at this time.”
